Israel Idol. An opportunity to experience music in a different culture and language.
And often, you don't even have to go far. Sometimes, they travel to you. (Baruch, that is.)
The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir sings for a large cathedral-like church in Brooklyn. Their strong voices all exist in harmony and give us, the audience, a chilling feeling.
Find live music and aspiring musicians and artists. They typically are at 14st, 34st, and 42nd st.
42nd street houses the most amazing ones. On any given day, you can find an opera singer, a lady playing a musical saw, a man playing a dragon violin while dancing in spandex pants, along with many more.
The 55 Bar is an amazing venue for anyone who loves jazz music. Although there is a bar, there are also tables where you could just sit and listen to music. They have different performers all the time, and the intimate atmosphere becomes almost magical the second the music starts.
Like Ke said, there is music everywhere on the subways. One place specifically on 42nd street, the shuttle between Times Square and Grand Central, lies 3 drummers who keeps you entertained across town. They are really talented, offering a harmony of three dumb beats at the same time! Also, if you ever pass by Steinway Hall, you can always hear musicians and talented pianists practicing on these exquisite and magnificent pianos. Similarly, Carnegie Hall is a music power house full of famous musicians and orchestras. I personally saw a Yo-Yo Ma performance there.
This is a group band with artists playing different instruments originating from Bolivia and Peru among other countries. Their instruments are unique and together, they create a sound of bliss and peace. They're really cool. You might be able to find them at the 42nd street station.
Often, concerts come to town. An awesome band named Skillet rocked out, as do many others, in Madison Square Garden.
Even though some people may consider the Broadways as more theater, Musicals still contains the elements of music. Their are many musicals that have great music along with the acting and staging. There's Wicked, Lion King, Mama Mia, Phantom of the Opera, AVENUE Q, and many more!
Feast of San Genaro is full of Italian music, especially form the olden days. Much singing and instrument playing fills the streets during this mid-September festival
Latin music can be enjoyed through the live bands that play in various restaurants.
For example:
Sofrito located on 57th street and 1st ave
Guantanamera Restaurant located on 8th ave and 56th street.
